My bump grew at full speed in the last three months. I was amazed by how elastic human skin is — it did not pop like an expanding balloon. The stretching did make it very itchy though. The bump was so heavy that I could hardly keep my balance walking. I had forgotten what it felt like not to side-sleep with a pillow underneath, or to have a body so light I could jump freely. I was very much looking forward to offloading the cargo and taking back my own body.

And yet I did not want to offload too early. I wanted the baby to stay as long as she should. I would miss the game I played with her — when she moved, I would jiggle her back. She would move happily and make my belly look like waves on the sea. I would also miss the times I whispered to her, to tell her that happiness is the most important thing in the world.

The third trimester is both of these things at once. The weight and the wonder. The impatience and the tenderness. TCM has a name for this moment too, and it is one of the most beautiful in the entire philosophy.


厚積薄發 (Hòu jī bó fā)— accumulate deeply, release at the right moment

The Chinese philosophy 厚積薄發 (Hòu jī bó fā) — accumulate deeply, release at the right moment — describes the wisdom of the bow drawn back slowly and held with great steadiness. All the energy gathered. All the preparation complete. The release not forced but arrived precisely, powerfully timed by the fullness of the preparation itself.

This is the third trimester.

Everything you have done since the first trimester has been accumulation. The stillness in the first months, when the body was building what could not yet be seen. The energy rising in the second, when the life inside you began to announce itself to the world. Every rest taken, every warming meal eaten, every oil diffused in the evening, every whisper, every wave on your belly — all of it has been the drawing back of the bow.

The third trimester is the holding. The full weight of preparation rests in the body, waiting for the moment.

You are asked one thing in these final months and weeks: trust the accumulation. You have done the work and the preparation is complete. What is coming will arrive at exactly the right moment. 


Aromatherapy for the final trimester — grounding, relieving, preparing

The third trimester asks for oils that ground rather than lift to prepare the body for what is coming. The emotional register shifts from the expansive joy of the second trimester to something quieter, more inward, more focused. 

Lavender — the most important oil of the third trimester for sleep. As the bump grows and position becomes more difficult, the quality of sleep deteriorates significantly. Lavender's linalyl acetate content consistently demonstrates improved sleep onset and quality. In TCM terms lavender calms the Heart and settles the Shen (神) that becomes agitated in the final weeks of anticipation.

Mandarin — returns from the first trimester toolkit as the gentlest and safest citrus oil in pregnancy. In the third trimester its sweet, warm, calming character addresses the particular anxiety of the final weeks. One drop on a tissue to inhale during moments of anxiety. 

Roman chamomile — the oil for the body under pressure. As the baby's weight presses downward on the pelvic floor and the lower back carries the full accumulation, Roman chamomile's anti-spasmodic and deeply calming properties address both the physical tension and the emotional holding that the third trimester generates. Dilute one drop in ten ml of sweet almond oil and massage gently onto the lower back and hips in slow circular movements. 

Ginger — the circulation oil. As the baby's weight increases pressure on the venous return from the legs, swollen ankles and feet become one of the most persistent discomforts of the final weeks. In TCM ginger is warming and pungent in nature. It moves 氣 (qì) and 血 (xuè) downward and outward, directly counteracting the stagnation that causes fluid to accumulate in the lower limbs. Its primary constituent gingerol stimulates local circulation and encourages the lymphatic system to clear accumulated fluid — the Western confirmation of what TCM has always understood about ginger as a circulatory remedy. Dilute one drop of ginger in fifteen ml of sweet almond oil, and have someone massage upward from ankle to knee in slow light strokes. Always upward following the direction of venous return toward the heart. Morning and evening if possible. Keep the feet elevated for ten minutes afterward.

One important caution: if the swelling is sudden, severe, appears in the face or hands as well as the feet, or is accompanied by headache or visual disturbance, do not reach for the ginger oil. These can be signs of a serious pregnancy complication that requires immediate medical attention. Ginger addresses normal third trimester oedema from the gradual accumulation of fluid under the weight of the growing baby.

Frankincense — returns in the third trimester with particular relevance. In the first trimester it supported the Kidney essence being drawn upon to build a new life. In the third trimester it supports the nervous system and the spirit as they prepare for the most profound physical experience of a woman's life. Its alpha-pinene and incensole acetate content has demonstrated anxiety-reducing and neurologically calming properties. In TCM words: frankincense creates the conditions for stillness and readiness simultaneously. 

A simple third trimester blend for diffusion: frankincense one drop, lavender two drops, mandarin one drop. Diffuse for twenty minutes before sleep. Let the room settle into stillness. The bow is held. Everything is ready.

Frankincense 1 drop · Lavender 2 drops · Mandarin 1 drop 

Unrefined sweet almond oil for the belly — not an essential oil but the most important topical application of the third trimester. As the skin stretches to accommodate the growing bump, itching becomes one of the most persistent and least discussed discomforts of the final weeks. Sweet almond oil, rich in oleic and linoleic fatty acids, deeply nourishes the skin's lipid barrier and provides immediate relief from the itching of rapid stretching. Warm a tablespoon of sweet almond oil between your palms and massage slowly over the bump in long upward strokes, morning and evening. 

Find the label “unrefined” and “cold-pressed” from reliable aromatherapy brands to make sure the sweet almond oil contains all natural content without chemical additions. The “pure” oil, which is bleached, does not have the same therapeutic effect. 


Nourishment in the third trimester — Clearing foetal toxins

There is a theory in TCM that has been passed from mother to daughter across generations of Chinese families. Throughout the whole pregnancy you have avoided foods classified as "cold" or "cool" in the Four Natures 四氣 (Sì qì), because the process of building new life requires warmth. From around week thirty-five, that restriction loosens. You introduce cooling foods gradually and moderately for the purpose of clearing foetal toxins 清胎毒 (Qīng tāidú).

The theory is this: if heat, dampness, or internal fire accumulates in the mother's body during pregnancy through diet, stress, insufficient rest, or the natural heat-generating process of carrying a child, it can be transmitted to the newborn. The result, in TCM understanding, is the newborn skin conditions that many European parents have encountered and puzzled over: neonatal eczema, red rashes, neonatal jaundice. These conditions are potentially preventable through what the mother eats in the final weeks.

Clearing heat and resolving toxins — 清熱解毒 (Qīng rè jiě dú) — is what the final weeks of pregnancy ask of the kitchen. The foods below are warm enough not to burden the Spleen, cooling enough to address accumulated internal heat, and gentle enough for a stressed digestive system.

Three third trimester practices

Massage your belly with sweet almond oil every morning and evening. Warm a tablespoon between your palms first. Massage with long slow upward strokes for five minutes. It not only soothes the overstretched skin — it is also a greeting to your baby, a good morning and a good evening, until the day you can meet her eye to eye.

Let your partner massage your feet and lower back every evening if possible. You may feel alone during pregnancy, as it can seem that you are facing the biggest challenge of your life by yourself. You are not. Your partner would do anything to make you feel better. Tell him how he can help and let him stand beside you. That is what this season is asking of both of you.

Play the game on the belly. Sing songs, finger dance, jiggle, whisper, play hide and seek — do it every day. The waves on the sea will not last much longer. Be there for every one of them. Your baby will not remember the games in words, but he or she will remember them in love.

What the philosophy is really saying

The bow has been drawn back for nine months.

The first trimester drew it through stillness. The second trimester drew it through rising. The third trimester holds it at full extension — everything accumulated, ready for that moment.

In Chinese literature, the philosphy 厚積薄發 (Hòu jī bó fā) means to accumulate deep knowledge and preparation over a long time, then release it powerfully at the right moment. It is the philosophy that great things require patient preparation.

You have had the best preparation. Your baby already knows the sound of your voice, the rhythm of your breathing, and the particular way you jiggle back when she moves.

Trust the bow. Trust the moment. It will go well. 


Can I use essential oils?

The aromatherapy suggestions in this article are based on a Diploma in Clinical Aromatherapy and current best practice guidelines for pregnancy. The third trimester requires the most careful approach of the three, as the proximity to birth changes the safety profile of several oils.

Clary sage, jasmine, and rose can stimulate uterine contractions and are used in clinical aromatherapy practice to support labour — but only under the direct supervision of a qualified aromatherapist or midwife trained in aromatherapy, and only at or after term. Do not use these oils at home during the third trimester without professional guidance.

Sweet almond oil is safe for topical use throughout all three trimesters and is one of the most widely recommended carrier oils in pregnancy aromatherapy. If you have a nut allergy, substitute with jojoba oil, which is technically a liquid wax and carries no nut allergy risk.

Lavender, frankincense, and mandarin — the oils recommended in this article — are considered among the safest available for use in the third trimester in low dilution and in diffusion. Always dilute before applying to skin: one drop of essential oil per ten ml of carrier oil.

Avoid applying any essential oil directly over the abdomen or bump in any trimester. The skin is at maximum stretch in the third trimester and is more sensitive than at any other point in the pregnancy.

The foods recommended in this article are nutritionally sound and safely consumed in the third trimester. Mung beans, chrysanthemum tea, watercress, and watermelon are all appropriate for regular consumption in the final weeks. If you have any specific dietary concerns or gestational diabetes, consult your midwife before making significant changes to your diet.

If you have a previous history of miscarriage, premature labour, or preterm birth, or if your pregnancy has been classified as high risk for any reason, consult your midwife before using any essential oil topically in the third trimester. For massage practices — the belly oil ritual, the lower back massage, the leg massage for swelling — unrefined sweet almond oil or jojoba oil used alone provide the same physical benefits without the additional considerations that essential oils introduce for high-risk pregnancies. The carrier oil is not a lesser alternative. For the skin-nourishing and circulatory purposes described in this article, it is entirely sufficient on its own.
