Earth Element Wellness Routine: Essential Oils & Practices for Spleen-Stomach Health
Earth type? Support your Spleen-Stomach meridians with lemon, sweet marjoram, and frankincense. Daily acupressure point, warm breakfast timing, and weekly cleansing bath ritual for digestion and mental clarity.
Introduction: Personalized Earth Wellness Routine
If you discovered you are an Earth type through the Five Elements quiz, this guide provides everything you need to support your Spleen and Stomach meridians: three essential oils to use daily, one acupressure point to stimulate, one morning nourishing practice, and a weekly restorative bath ritual. These tools prevent imbalance before it becomes a problem—addressing the root of common Earth-type issues like sluggish digestion, overthinking, and fatigue.
In Western wellness, the approach to a symptom is usually the same regardless of who you are. Lavender is for insomnia. Peppermint is for headaches. Eucalyptus is for the respiratory system. The person is secondary to the complaint.
In TCM aromatherapy, we have a framework that explains why some people experience certain problems more often than others, how to treat them when they arise, and — more importantly — how to prevent them from arising in the first place. That framework is rooted in the Five Elements and the constitutional type each person carries. If you do not yet know your element, take the Five Element Quiz to find out which one you belong to.
This article is a practical guide to the most common imbalance patterns for the Earth element — three essential oils, one acupressure point, one weekly practice, and a lifestyle suggestion. The recommended essential oils can be used every day as part of a wellness routine in whichever application method suits you best, whether blended into a massage oil, added to an aromatic bath or foot soak, or placed in a diffuser.

Why Earth Type Matters: Understanding Spleen & Stomach Health
The organs associated with the Earth element are the Spleen and Stomach. As the central organs of digestion, they are responsible for transforming food and drink into Qi, body fluids, and Blood, and for absorbing and distributing nutrients throughout the body. Following the Fire element in the Five Element creation cycle, the Earth element furnishes the Mind-Spirit — Shen 神 (shén) — with the capacity for concrete thought, and is associated on a mental level with learning, thinking, and analysis.
The Earth element represents Qi in its most formative expression and is concerned with maintaining physical substance and form. It influences the lips and the flesh of the body. When the Earth element is impaired — most commonly through Spleen Qi deficiency — symptoms of sluggish digestion arise: lack of appetite, flatulence, hiccups, and indigestion. Excess fluid retained in the body produces a condition of dampness and phlegm associated with lymphatic congestion, showing up as heaviness in the head and limbs, a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen, and persistent tiredness.
As the organ responsible for transforming food essence into Blood, the Spleen is considered the origin of Blood and the organ that holds it securely within the vessels. When Spleen Qi is deficient, the blood vessels lose their tone, which can result in conditions such as subcutaneous haemorrhage.
On the mental and emotional level, the Spleen governs thinking, concentration, learning, and memory. In a state of Qi deficiency, concentration falters and thinking becomes sluggish and dull. Just as Spleen imbalance produces fullness and congestion in the body, it produces its equivalent in the mind — overthinking, mental churning, and an inability to arrive at clarity or rest.
3 Essential Oils for the Earth Type
Lemon (Citrus limonum) — Clear Dampness & Lymphatic Congestion
Lemon is cool and dry in nature. It clears hot dampness and phlegm, reflected in its action as a lymphatic decongestant — one of the best essential oils for decongesting, cleansing, and detoxifying the body. It is applicable in conditions associated with excess dampness and poor circulation, including obesity, cellulite, high blood cholesterol, and arteriosclerosis. Its anticoagulant properties move the Blood in energetic terms, improving circulation and toning the blood vessels — making it useful for broken capillaries, varicose veins, haemorrhoids, and nosebleeds. Its antiviral nature makes it effective for colds characterised by yellow or green catarrh. On a mental level, lemon's bright, sharp scent clarifies confused thinking and eases the worried mental looping that is the Earth type's most characteristic emotional pattern.
Sweet marjoram (Origanum majorana) — Tonify & Relax the Spleen
Sweet marjoram's sweet, nourishing, and balancing quality places it firmly within the Earth element. It has the unusual ability to both strengthen and relax simultaneously — tonifying and circulating Qi while clearing cold phlegm and calming the mind. Its Qi-moving action produces clear antispasmodic and analgesic properties, making it applicable for muscular stiffness and pain, nervous spasm, intestinal colic, and osteoarthritis. By smoothing the flow of Qi in the chest, it can calm and regulate the Heart, relieving palpitations, high blood pressure, and a racing heartbeat. It is also one of the best oils for a nervous cough and asthma, particularly where there is clear or white catarrh.
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) — Calm Mind & Clarify Thought
Frankincense connects to the Earth element through its fundamental ability to calm and clarify thought. Its profound capacity to relax and revitalise the nervous system makes it an ideal support for meditation, stilling mental chatter, and treating nervous tension and mental exhaustion. It smooths the flow of stagnant Qi wherever accumulated stress has generated irritability and held tension. It is also said to deepen the breath and relieve tightness in the chest, and its anticatarrhal, expectorant, and anti-infectious properties make it useful for bronchitis, asthma, laryngitis, and sinusitis. Its combined action of smoothing Qi and calming the nerves gives it a useful analgesic effect for rheumatic, menstrual, and epigastric pain.
Daily Acupressure Practice: Stomach 36 (足三里)
Stomach 36 is known as the longevity point in TCM — the most broadly tonifying point in the entire system. It soothes gas, bloating, nausea, and general digestive discomfort, and when stimulated regularly, it strengthens overall vitality and immune function, combats fatigue, and builds physical stamina.
The point is located on the outer leg, four finger-widths below the lower border of the kneecap, one finger-width toward the outside of the leg. It rests in the shin muscle, in a slight depression you can feel with firm pressure.
Lifestyle Practice: Warm Breakfast During Stomach Peak Hours
The Stomach and Spleen meridians are most active in the morning — the Stomach from 7 to 9am, the Spleen from 9 to 11am. Eating a warm breakfast during the Stomach's peak hour tonifies digestion at its most receptive moment and allows the Spleen to transform and distribute nutrients effectively through the morning. The result is a sustained sense of fuel and energy, mental clarity, and sharper thinking through the first half of the day. Maintained as a consistent habit, this simple practice strengthens both the immune system and physical stamina over time.
Weekly Wellness Ritual: Lymphatic Cleansing Bath
Take a warm bath with essential oils at least once a week to clear body heat, nourish the Spleen and Stomach, and promote the movement of Qi in the lower abdomen. Add the following to a tablespoon of full-fat milk, then pour into a warm bath and soak for 15 minutes:
Lemon · 2 drops
Juniper berry · 2 drops
Sweet orange · 3 drops
Lemon promotes circulation and lymphatic drainage, clearing the excess fluid that accumulates when Qi energy is deficient. Juniper berry expels that excess fluid from the body through its diuretic and detoxifying properties. Sweet orange nourishes the Spleen and Stomach, gently moving and redistributing stagnant Qi in the abdomen — providing the warmth and forward movement that the Earth type needs to shift out of congestion and back into flow.
